3 teenagers charged in vandalism, burglary

Baseball facility was damaged

Juvenile court hearings are pending against three teenagers accused in an alleged crime spree at the Center Township Athletic Association baseball complex earlier this month.

State police Monday charged the trio — two boys and a girl, all 15 of the Butler area — with felony charges of burglary and trespass and misdemeanor charges of theft and criminal mischief.

The girl also is charged with false reports to law enforcement authorities. Police did not release the names of the defendants, who all remain at their homes.

Police allege the youths broke into the Mercer Road baseball field complex on March 17 and vandalized buildings and other property. The teens also are accused of stealing food from the concession stand.

Association officials notified police after discovering the crimes March 18. Several outbuildings were broken into and damaged, and racial and homophonic slurs carved into picnic tables.

Authorities added that obscenities had been spray painted on buildings and the concession stand looted of food.

The list of damaged property detailed in a police report included a deep freezer that was spray-painted on the inside, a wooden shed door, a metal door to the concession stand, a wooden door to the dugout building, the concrete garage floor, the concrete dugout wall and the telecommunications box and cord at the back of the concession stand.

Carl Ekas, association president, said Tuesday that other damaged property included the picnic tables and the bottom panel of the garage door. He added that about four dozen baseballs as well as softballs and catcher's mitts were also damaged.

Ekas estimated damage at between $1,000 and $1,200. The stolen food, which included peanuts and ice cream novelties, totaled $30 to $40.

The suspects first appearance in Butler County juvenile court will be for their pre-adjudication conferences, which have not been scheduled.

A pre-adjudication conference is similar to a status conference in adult court. At that conference each defendant will have the option to fight the charges at a later adjudication hearing, the equivalent of a trial in adult court, or admit to charges — similar to a guilty plea.

Ekas offered his opinion about how those responsible should be punished.

“I'd like to see them pay for the damage that they've done,” he said. “They should probably do some community service, too.”
