Boy, 12, rescued from rock at McConnells Mill park
A young boy had to be rescued after he found himself stuck on a rock and in a hard place during a family outing Tuesday evening at McConnells Mill State Park in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, authorities said.
Slippery Rock Township volunteer firefighters ended up utilizing a makeshift ladder bridge to save the 12-year-old from his predicament. He was not injured.
The boy was with his family near the park's approved climbing area on Rim Road just up the hill from the covered bridge about 5:30 p.m. when he “jumped from one boulder to another,” park manager Dustin Drew said.
The boy, however, was apparently too nervous to take any more jumps, and became stranded.
“There was a slight difference in boulders, and he apparently didn't feel comfortable,” Drew said.
Although scared, the boy was “within talking distance” of family members, Drew said, noting that the child's approximately hour-long dilemma never was considered life-threatening.
Charles Peak, chief of the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department, said crews made an improvised bridge using a roof ladder and an extension ladder.
“(The boy) crawled across, safe and sound,” Peak said.
The park remains open despite the coronavirus pandemic, and authorities urged visitors to stay vigilant while enjoying the facilities.
“It's the wet time of year,” Peak said, “and people should be careful and watch where they're walking and hiking, especially on the trails and slippery areas.”
