Square dance draws crowd
Every winter, the Harrisville Volunteer Fire Company hosts a series of square dances in its fire hall to raise money and give locals something to do during dull weekends.
Saturday brought the first of four planned square dances for this year. They'll run monthly through April.
Chief Steve Bickel said a dance like Saturday's usually brings in about $600 or $700. The money will likely go toward a replacement tanker, which the department is saving up to buy.
“A lot of these guys are farmers,” Bickel said, gesturing around the room. “During the summer, they're all too busy.”
Saturday's dance saw 11 sets of eight dancers, meaning at least 88 dancers attended. Counting those who didn't dance, about 100 people showed up.
The record for most sets at the dance remains at 13, but there three more dances in 2020 that might break that record.
