Sheriff's office warns about scam
The Butler County Sheriff's Office is warning citizens of a scam call circulating the area.
The caller is using a common technique call “spoofing” to make it appear they are calling from the law enforcement office's phone number, 724-284-5245.
They identify themselves as a deputy, oftentimes named something such as Mike Jacobs, and attempt to arrange for the victim to pay a fine or meet him.
Sheriff Mike Slupe advises that recipients of such a call ought to hang up immediately and not engage in conversation.
Sheriff office staff report that they believe the call originates from the Greensburg area.
