Murder suspect's hearing on competency delayed

A former Butler County woman's competency hearing on a murder charge was delayed at her court appearance in Florida on Thursday.

Kimberly Kessler is accused of the first-degree murder of Joleen Cummings with whom she worked at a hair salon in Nassau County, Fla.

First Coast News of Jacksonville, Fla., reported that Kessler “walked in with what appeared to be a Holy Bible, still wearing a mask from her refusal to submit to necessary health tests.”

The station also reported Kessler has a new lawyer.

In November, Kessler's former attorney, Teresa Sopp, ceased representing Kessler because she and her client were not seeing eye to eye.

Sopp told the judge Kessler called her “a piece of garbage” in court.

Nassau County Judge James Daniel moved the competency hearing to Feb. 25 to bring the new lawyer up to speed on the case.

An attorney providing institutional counsel for Florida State Hospital sent a letter in October claiming Kessler fit to stand trial.

Kessler grew up in Butler County and attended South Butler County School District schools. She was reported missing in Butler County in 2004 and lived under multiple aliases in 14 states before her arrest.

Cummings was a 34-year-old mother of three who went missing after failing to pick up her children after school and missing work.

Investigators believe Kessler is the last person to see Cummings alive.

Her body has not been found.
