2 teens accused of strong-arm robbery of boy
Two boys are being held at a northern Butler County juvenile detention facility while awaiting hearings in connection with the reported strong-arm robbery of another boy in Butler, authorities said.
The teens — both 17 — are charged in the suspected BB gun stickup Monday evening, according to Butler police. One teen is from East Brady, and the other is from Fairview Township.
District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned the defendants on felony charges of robbery and conspiracy, and misdemeanor charges of terroristic threats and disorderly conduct. He set bond at $500,000 for each defendant.
The teens were placed in the Western PA Child Care on Route 38 in Allegheny Township following arraignment. They were subsequently turned over to the county's juvenile court authorities.
Police said the victim, a 15-year-old Butler boy, told them he was approached by the suspects around 6 p.m. in the area of North McKean and East Brady streets, near the Butler Public Library.
He recounted the teen from East Brady pulled a gun from his clothing and displayed it, and the Fairview Township boy told him, “Give me what you got,” according to charging documents.
The firearm, police said, apparently was a BB gun.
Court documents said the victim told police he handed over a vape pen valued at $35 and about two grams of marijuana and then ran away.
A short time later, officers found the suspects walking in the area of the 400 block of West Brady Street. Police said the East Brady boy had what they described as a BB gun that looked similar to a Glock pistol, but no other evidence was recovered.
Under state law, the defendants are charged as adults even though they are 17. They may petition Common Pleas Court to be prosecuted as juveniles.
Preliminary hearings for both boys are scheduled for Jan. 13. Online court records did not indicate if either defendant has an attorney.
