11-year-old killed in tragic accident Jan. 14

An 11-year-old boy was killed and his two siblings were injured Jan. 14 when a vehicle struck them at the bus stop in front of their Geibel Road home in Summit Township.

The children were waiting for the bus to take them to Summit Elementary School around 8:50 a.m. when they were hit.

Authorities said the boy, Mark Fike, was pronounced dead at Butler Memorial Hospital.

His 6-year-old brother, Ryan, police said, was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, while 9-year-old sister, Lyssa, was taken to BMH with an apparent minor ankle injury. Their parents said both children recuperated at home.

Police identified the driver as Gina Kibbie, 38, of Butler, who works as a paraprofessional at Summit Elementary School. She and a 7-year-old boy in her car were uninjured. Authorities said the accident occurred when Kibbie was blinded by the sun's glare and didn't see the children waiting for the bus.

“When our school community experiences a tragedy, such as the loss of a young life, it impacts all of us,” Brian White Jr., Butler Area School District's superintendent, wrote in a letter to parents. “My thoughts and prayers are with the students and their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”

Fike's family asked that donations be sent to the Butler-Freeport Community Trail due to Mark's love of insects.

In June, the trail hosted “Meet Mark's Friends,” during which 120 children took part in bug exploration hikes. A new insect identification kiosk was donated in Fike's memory by Cranberry Township's TrueCommerce, and a bench was donated by the family that reads “In memory of Mark Fike, the future biologist the world will never know.”
