Lucille E. Smith

Lucille Smith

Lucille Smith, 97, of Butler, passed away peacefully at Concordia at the Orchard in Butler on Nov. 26, 2019.

The former Lucille Emma Hinterlang was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Donegal Township, Butler.

She was the daughter of Marcella Weiland and John M. Hinterlang.

Lucille married Dale A. Smith on Oct. 6, 1943, at St. Wendelin’s Church, Carbon Center. Dale passed away Oct. 7, 1978.

Before she married, Lucille was employed at Castle Rubber. Later, she worked for Magnetics in East Butler, from which she retired in 1987. In her retirement, Lucille had been actively involved in the Butler County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary as a volunteer. In 2002, she was the recipient of the “Volunteer of the Year” award.

Lucy will always be remembered for her interest and expertise in growing houseplants and gardening. She would never turn down a “trip to the nursery,” even if it was just to look around.

Lucille and Dale raised six children: Sally Ann Bulger (Ed) of Lexington, Va., Robert J. Smith (Linda) of Kittanning, John M. Smith of Herman, Janice M. Groschen (Steve) of Palm Desert, Calif., Mark E. Smith of Herman, and Karen L. Williams (Rob) of Underhill Center, Vt.

She is survived by all of her children as well as 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren who lovingly called her “Gran.”

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tanya Smith Eaton; a great-grandson, Johnathan James Smith; a daughter-in-law, Donna A Smith; and her two sisters, Pauline Saeler and Marie Collins.
