Main Street bakery known for its meatballs is closing
The Grandma's Meatballs will be missed.
On Friday, Dolce Mia's Bakery officially announced its closure with a Facebook post and a sign on the door.
“It's with great sadness that I announce the closing of Dolce Mia's Bakery,” the Facebook post said.
Maria Stephenson is the owner of thebakery.
“It's far from lack of enough business, for which I'm so grateful to all of my loyal customers,” the post continued.
Stephenson said in her announcement she is stepping away from the business for her health. Her post went on to explain that working more than 30 years in catering, as well as running the bakery, has taken a toll on her health, making it hard to work long days to meet the demands of her business.
The bakery is taking pre-orders through three final days of business, which include Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. The post said a limited number of items will be available, including cream puffs, cannoli and “my No. 1 selling item: My Grandma's Meatballs.”
The company started in 2012 and has held a presence on Main Street and at local events.
Sarah McKinney of Butler called from the storefront's stoop to place a preorder after she and her family found the baker closed on Monday.
“I love their meatballs,” McKinney said.
McKinney said she will miss seeing the bakery at events around town, especially the Italian Festival.
“They're the best meatballs,” McKinney said.
Charmaine Fetterman, an event coordinator for the Sons and Daughters of Italy in Butler, said Stephenson is a good and authentic baker.
“She's an unbelievable talent that is so authentic and so heartfelt,” Fetterman said. “She's very family-oriented and she will be very, very missed.”
Fetterman said many who work or pass through downtown Butler will feel an emptiness after the bakery closes.
She said she also hopes Stephenson will return to Butler's Italian Festival in some capacity.
“I would love to stand beside her again at the Italian Festival,” Fetterman said.
