Sentencing reset in corpse abuse case

Man failed to appear in court

The sentencing of James Howard-George, who pleaded guilty last month to helping Ishemer Ramsey hide and burn Melissa Barto's body in 2017, has been rescheduled for Jan. 30.

Howard-George was scheduled to be sentenced Friday, but missed his court appearance because his son was in a hospital, according to his lawyer, public defender Charles Nedz.

Nedz said Howard-George appeared at the sentencing two hours late, but by then court was adjourned.

On Friday, Assistant District Attorney Terri Schultz said she would request a bench warrant for his arrest, but one was never processed for the 26-year-old Butler man, who pleaded guilty to abusing a corpse and hiding evidence of murder.

Howard-George testified against Ramsey during Ramsey's trial in October.

At the time, Howard-George faced a number of charges related to Barto's death. But in November, Howard-George agreed to plead guilty to charges of abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence, both misdemeanors.

In return, Schultz agreed to drop the charge of conspiracy to commit criminal homicide, noting that the charge would have been difficult to prove.

Under the deal, Howard-George faces a jail sentence of time served to 18 months. He has been in Butler County Prison since June 13, 2017, and was released Nov. 13 after taking the plea deal.
