Center Twp. seeks road foreman

CENTER TWP — As firetrucks whirred out of Unionville fire hall toward snow-related car accidents Wednesday evening, township supervisors inside pondered how to tend to their roads.

The township's foreman, Gregg Brewster, recently resigned to take another job. The Center Township board of supervisors planned to appoint another member of the road crew to his post during its meeting, but that worker left for another job as well.

Their meeting occurred during a small snowfall that saw multiple minor car accidents on Route 8, near the fire hall where board meetings are held. Township Solicitor Michael Gallagher, noted the weather as they discussed the urgency of filling the road job vacancies.

“Look, it's snowing out there,” Gallagher said. “This is important.”

The township has a few candidates coming in Friday to interview for part-time positions. The board agreed Wednesday to allow for quick hiring of new leadership, either from Friday's interviews or within their department. They'll advertise the position after if the search continues longer.

The poor weather in question, according to National Weather Service of Pittsburgh meteorologist Michael Brown, didn't bring much precipitation, but enough snow arrived on very cold ground to cause some freezing.

The board approved a $1,955,800 budget for 2020.The budget sets the township's taxation rate at 7.05 mills, the same as last year. However, allocation of township tax-revenue within those 7.05 mills changed, as the township paid off a $2 million loan for its maintenance facility this year. A total of 2.5 mills from the debt service tax were distributed to the general fund, the fire protection fund and the capital projects fund. Those accounts received 0.8, 0.2 and 1.5 mill increases, respectively, from the money the township was spending on its debts.A mill generates $1 in revenue for each $1,000 of a property's assessed value.
