Dispute over damaged Center Twp. road fixed

Gas co. cites plan for Sunset Drive

CENTER TWP — A dispute with a gas company over a milled road appears to be on the way to getting resolved.

Columbia Gas representatives met with some members of Center Township's board of supervisors and public works team Wednesday, according to board Chairman Ron Flatt. They believe a miscommunication led to previous concerns over gas-line work in the area of Sunset Drive's intersection with Benbrook and Brandon roads.

Last week, supervisors fretted over their torn-up pavement. They said the company milled a stretch of road on a weekend and without asking, and that it was likely too late in the season to be able to put a good finished surface on the road this year.

The township had previously resurfaced the patch of road with a temporary fix to prepare it for the winter, making this new development frustrating.

After meeting with Columbia Gas, Flatt said they were mistaken — the company is planning to redo the temporary fix themselves.

“Columbia still intends to let their paver pave over it,” Flatt said.

The company is working to make it drivable again for the winter, and then will return after the cold weather to top off and finish the road to ordinance specifications.

The township's engineer is going to have an inspector on-site to approve surface temperatures before any work occurs, Flatt said, easing concerns among the township's board.

“After as much miscommunication as there was, it was really good to see an operational plan move forward,” Flatt said.

The township's previous patch of the road cost about $73,000, according to township secretary Anthony Amendola. Supervisors still intend to invoice the company for that work.
