Third robbery suspect turns himself in

Altercation took place at SR Twp. apartment

SLIPPERY ROCK — The third Slippery Rock University student wanted in connection with a suspected strong-armed robbery at an off-campus housing complex last week has turned himself in.

Accompanied by his attorney, 21-year-old Troy L. Moon appeared Wednesday morning at the office of District Judge Bill O'Donnell in Slippery Rock.

O'Donnell arraigned Moon of Slippery Rock on two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of robbery, one count of reckless endangerment, one count of theft by unlawful taking, one count of theft by receiving stolen property and one count of assault.

Troopers placed him in handcuffs following arraignment and took him to the Butler County Prison, where he's being held in lieu of $250,000 bond.

Moon's co-defendants — Xavier A. Brown, 21, and Duy G. Nguyen, 22, both of Slippery Rock — have been in the county prison on similar bond since Friday when police arrested them in the alleged robbery earlier that day at the Grove Apartments in Slippery Rock Township.

Brown and Nguyen face the same charges as Moon.

Police allege the three men got into an altercation with the victim, a 24-year-old Pittsburgh man, at one of the apartments. A handgun was brandished during the incident, and the victim was apparently pistol-whipped, investigators said.

About $100 was also removed from the man's pants, police said.

He suffered a fractured skull, according to authorities, and was taken to Grove City Medical Center before being transferred to an unspecified Pittsburgh hospital. His condition is not known.

Later that day, police arrested Brown and Nguyen. When they couldn't find Moon, they got an arrest warrant for him.

Moon's attorney, Justin Quinn of Beaver County, contacted O'Donnell's office Tuesday to say his client would turn himself in. He walked into the office around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday.

SRU spokesman Robb King said Brown is a junior marketing student and Moon and Nguyen are both seniors majoring in safety management.

Preliminary hearings for all three defendants are scheduled for Nov. 27.

“While the charges are significant,” Quinn said Wednesday, “we're looking forward to fleshing out the facts to show what truly happened here.”

Attorney Frank Walker II of Clairton, who is representing Brown, declined to comment.

Online court records listed Owen Seman of Murrysville as Nguyen's attorney. He did not immediately return a telephone call Wednesday.
