CHERRY TWP — County Commissioner Kevin Boozel's trip to Harrisburg to garner funds for Harrisville Road was successful, as the state released $1 million to completely rebuild the road and make it safe for traffic.

While Boozel asked legislators for $2.6 million in Commonwealth Financing Authority Multimodal Transportation Funding to rebuild the road from Boyers Road to Route 308, the county received $1 million.

A local match of $100,000, which includes $25,000 from the $5 fee added to vehicle registration costs last year, means the total amount available for the project is $1.1 million.

Boozel said the road is sunken into the mud, and a water tanker's front wheels became stuck in one instance.

“It's so rough, emergency services avoid it,” Boozel said.

While engineers will look at the project again to determine where the $1.1 million will be spent, Boozel said the northern stretch of the road between Branchton and Boyers roads definitely will be rebuilt.

The project will see new sub-base, surfacing, sealant and roadside drainage installed.

He expects construction to begin in the summer and wrap up in about four to five months.
