Student accused of assaulting staff
SUMMIT TWP — A student was arrested after state police said he got into a fight with a staff member at the Summit Academy reform school.
The 17-year-old boy, who is from California, is accused of assaulting the staffer shortly before 5:40 p.m. Friday at the facility in Summit Township, police said.
The victim, a 23-year-old man from Latrobe, Westmoreland County, was not injured, Summit Academy spokesman Dick Roberts said Monday. He noted that the man, a counselor, returned to work the next morning.
The boy, who authorities did not identify, is facing an aggravated assault charge, a felony, in Butler County juvenile court.
Under state law, anyone who causes or attempts to cause harm to certain protected workers — including an officer or employee of a juvenile detention center — can be charged with aggravated assault.
Authorities said the youth was subsequently returned to the facility.
Summit Academy on Herman Road is a private, residential school for court adjudicated delinquent and dependent boys and young men, ages 14 to 18.
