General Election's low turnout predictable
Tuesday night's General Election is set to be canvassed Friday morning, wrapping up this year's local races.
Along with unofficial results, in Wednesday morning's post-election clarity three facts were clear: write-in votes will be of interest Friday, new voting machines brought only minor problems, and turnout was predictably low.
While the high-profile write-in campaign in the Court of Common Pleas race only garnered about 26.2 percent of the vote, other write-in results will need clarification Friday.About 20 top-level township and borough races did not have candidates listed on the ballot Tuesday. When write-in votes are counted Friday morning, it's likely more winners will be known. For instance, in Chicora no one appeared on the ballot for three open borough council positions, but 407 write-in votes were cast.
Shari Brewer, director of the Butler County Bureau of Elections, said the county's new paper ballot counting systems suffered only minor problems. At a handful of polling places, she said, absentee ballots weren't able to be scanned into the final count. They were instead brought back to the election office and scanned in there. Also, five of the new scanning machines had technical problems and needed swapping out with replacements. The votes inside were switched over, Brewer said.“We have extra machines for that reason,” Brewer said Wednesday morning. “We were able to do what we needed to do.”
The final unofficial vote count as of Wednesday was 39,532. That number may shift after the election is canvassed and certified. In terms of turnout, that comes out to about 31 percent voter participation, which is typical of recent off-year elections. The precinct with the highest level of participation was Cherry Valley with 47.5 percent turnout. Votes in that borough are cast at VFW Post 7840.Cherry Valley's high score doesn't mean the borough produced a mass of votes. The precinct has only 40 registered voters, and 19 voted. The most recent U.S. Census population estimate for Cherry Valley is 53 people. On the other end of the spectrum, Cranberry Township East 1 produced the lowest turnout in the county. Just 484 of 2,671 registered voters participated, or 18.1 percent. Residents of that precinct vote at Victory Family Church.
