Three alleged drug dealers indicated on federal charges
PITTSBURGH — A federal grand jury indicted two men and a woman stemming from a pair of Butler County drug investigations dating back to 2016.
Named in the indictment are Mark A. Carter, 33, formerly of Butler; and Brandon J. Morris, 34, and Janell Hunter, 23, both of Philadelphia County.
The trio was originally charged in Butler County, but their cases were later taken over by federal prosecutors.
The 11-count superseding indictment announced Tuesday by the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh alleges Morris possessed with intent to distribute heroin, crack cocaine and fentanyl.
He is accused of conspiring with Carter to distribute crack cocaine and heroin. Morris, a felon, was also allegedly found in possession of a firearm.
Additionally, the indictment alleges that from June to July 2016, Carter possessed and intended to distribute heroin and crack cocaine and conspired with Hunter.
Before federal authorities assumed control of the local cases, state police charged Carter and Morris after a June 2016 drug raid at an East Brady Street home in Butler. The raid turned up more than 300 stamp bags of heroin/opioids, a dozen bags of crack, other contraband and about $7,600 in currency, authorities said.
A 12-gauge shotgun was also allegedly found in the home. Because of his criminal record, Morris is prohibited from possessing any firearms.
A month later, according to authorities, police again charged Carter and Hunter after the pair was found inside a Butler Township hotel room with a large amount of drugs.
Troopers obtained a search warrant in July 2016 for the room, where they allegedly seized 84 grams of suspected cocaine, 40 grams of suspected heroin, a digital scale and glassine packets.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Morris and Carter each face a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison and a $5 million fine if convicted on the federal charges. Hunter faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
