SRU to hold annual Military Appreciation Week

Slippery Rock University will pay homage to the military this upcoming week.

The school will hold its annual Military Appreciation Week from Nov. 11 to 15. It will kick off with a veterans breakfast held at the SRU Veteran's Center at 9 a.m. Nov. 11 in the Smith Student Ballroom.

At 11 a.m. that same day, the Office of Alumni Engagement will host a Veterans Day ceremony at the Russell Wright Alumni House. Jondavid Longo, Slippery Rock's mayor, will deliver the keynote address at the ceremony.

During the ceremony, Pancoast will present a service dog to SRU student veteran Heath Fishburn of New Castle. The event will also include members of the SRU Army ROTC raising the colors, laying a wreath, firing a 21-gun salute and playing taps. Lt. Col. Lillian Woodington, professor of military science, will recognize enlisted cadets. Refreshments will be served,

Both Nov. 11 events are free. Other events during Military Appreciation Week include a 6 p.m. event Nov. 11 in the SSC Ballroom in the SVA Team Building in which SRU students participate in a series of leadership activities to build camaraderie between veteran and civilian students and a 12:30 p.m. event Nov. 12 at The Quad during which ROTC cadets will do 22 push-ups for every donation to the SVA's service dog fund.

Bobby Hemline, a four-tour Iraqi War veteran, will speak at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 in the SSC Theater. He is a professional motivational speaker and comedian.

The movie “Indivisible” will be screened as part of an event titled Religion and the Military at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 in SSC Room 322, and a panel discussion on the myths and misconceptions surrounding military deployments will take place at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 14 in the SSC Theater. The SVA will screen an episode of the TV show “Band of Brothers” at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 14 in SSC Room 322, and the Student Government Association will show the film “12 Strong” at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 in the SSC Theater.

On Nov. 15, members of the SRU community are asked to wear red to “remember everyone deployed.” Shirts will be provided to those who attend the veterans breakfast and other events throughout the week.

During the course of the week, canned food donations will be accepted for the VA Butler Healthcare Health Care System and Robin's Home, which supports housing for women veterans and their children. Donations can be made between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. in The Suite on the SSC's second floor.
