Seneca Valley pieces together mosaic plans

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley Schools Superintendent Tracy Vitale provided the school board with glittering insight Monday night about a mosaic that will be installed in the new aquatic center.

The board approved an agreement during its Monday meeting between the school district and Elizabeth Klevens Mosaics.

“The mosaic artist (Klevens) will be ... harvesting or reusing tiles from the old, current swimming pool,” Vitale said. “She will be harvesting those, using those and recycling those in the new piece of artwork.”

Klevens will also work with district art students and teachers to design and complete the piece.

Vitale said while an artist is being commissioned for the project, the heart of the work lies within the district.

When it comes to the construction of the new Seneca Valley campus, Vitale said the district must consider two questions.

“How can we take the history of Seneca Valley and the aquatic center that was built and carry that over into the new building?” Vitale asked. “And ultimately, how can this be a learning experience for our students?”

The mosaic will be installed on a wall in the “foyer” of the aquatic center.

Vitale said the idea for the project came from a professional learning event involving the district's art teachers for kindergarten to 12th grade.

“They came up with this,” Vitale said. “We're pretty excited about this.”

Vitale encouraged the board to review Klevens' other projects online.
