Show reaps rewards for auxiliary

BUTLER TWP — The 11th annual Farm Toy Show and Sale Saturday at the Butler Township Volunteer Fire District fire hall brought out all types: buyers, sellers, collectors and displayers.

The event, which ran from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., has raised money for the auxiliary to the fire district for the last 11 years.

Even in the age of multiplayer computer games, there's still a market for miniature tractors, livestock and hay balers, according to Carol Blessel, the auxiliary secretary.

“It's done pretty well this year. It appeals to a certain niche market,” Blessel said.

Connor Felsing, 7, of Penn Township wasn't there to buy or sell. He was showing off his first display, a miniature farm complete cows, goats and pigs and with Play Dough pumpkins and coffee grounds filling in for manure.

Conner, the son of Bryan and Sarah Felsing, said it took him three weeks to put his display together in the basement.

His mother said they came to the toy show and sale last year and her son got the idea of bringing his own display this year.

He worked on it after school and on weekends.“I'm happy with the way it turned out,” Connor said. “Next year, I'll probably do a different one.”Connor admitted that a several of the miniature farm vehicles in his display included “a couple I got today.”Colt Teets, 15, of Slippery Rock was a repeat displayer.“It's basically the same I had before but I've added to it,” Colt said, He said his original display took two years to design and build.Colt lives on a cattle farm, said his mother, Jodi Teets, and as soon as he packs away his miniature farm equipment, he'll jump on the real thing as he had a date with a brush hog later that afternoon.Alvin Vogel of Evans City is also a cattle farmer, but he was at the fire hall to help out his son, Charlie, who is a seller and a collector with 10,000 pieces of toy equipment in his collection.“Charlie does this mostly as a hobby,” Vogel said. “It keeps him off the streets and out of the bars. It's a little expensive but it's cheaper than bail.”
