Cast a Can, Cast a Vote to help in Adams Twp.
ADAMS TWP — Every vote “can” count next month in Adams Township as voters are encouraged to help feed the hungry.
Voters are asked to bring a nonperishable food item or paper product when they go to vote at any of Adams' three polling places Nov. 5. Collected items will be donated to the Kilian Cupboard Food Pantry the next day.
“This is completely new,” said Haley Geyer, director of parks and recreation. “We have just been looking to get the community more involved.”
Adams Township does a Toys for Tots drive every December. Geyer and her committee were looking for ways to increase community involvement during the holiday season when they decided St. Kilian's food program provided services for people close to home.
“A lot of people don't know how many people are in need in our community,” Geyer said.
Geyer hopes to see Cast a Can, Cast a Vote expand in the future. She'd like to get a good turnout this year during elections.
“And then, hopefully, expand and build upon it,” Geyer said.
Voters should check food expiration dates before dropping off items.
The Kilian Cupboard Food Pantry provides food to “neighbors in need,” according to the St. Kilian parish website.
The pantry is open from 3 to 6 p.m. every Wednesday at 205 Clark St. in Mars.
