Group on hunting trip loses RV, trailer to fire

Slippery Rock volunteer firefighters battle the flames that engulfed a recreational vehicle about 8 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 79 northbound in Worth Township. No one was injured.
6 occupants were on way to Wyoming

WORTH TWP — A hunting party destined for Wyoming fell prey to some bad luck Tuesday morning when fire erupted in their recreational vehicle traveling Interstate 79, authorities said.

The six occupants from the Saxonburg area managed to get out safely — while saving their guns, ammunition and other hunting supplies — before flames engulfed the 30-foot vehicle and an attached 20-foot trailer around 8 a.m.

The RV was a total loss, said Ryan Hanchosky, chief of the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Team. Along with the trailer and contents destroyed in the accidental fire, the total estimated damage was $400,000.

State police assisted but they did not release the names of the driver or passengers. Their report identified the RV as a 2003 Monaco.

The fire broke out as the occupants were northbound on I-79 near the Butler-Lawrence County line. They were traveling to a hunt in Wyoming.

“They noticed a lot of white smoke coming from the engine compartment on the rear of the RV,” Hanchosky said. The driver pulled over and off the road.

By then, emergency crews said, there was heavy fire in the engine compartment. They called 911.

A dispatcher said the 911 center received “probably 30 calls” immediately after the huge motor vehicle burst into flames.

“We pulled on scene,” Hanchosky said, “and saw an RV with a trailer attached, fully involved in the rear of the RV and the front of the trailer.”

An attack crew quickly got into the vehicle, allowing firefighters to simultaneously battle the blaze from the inside and outside.

It took about 30 minutes before the fire was extinguished.

The Portersville Volunteer Fire Department assisted with a water tanker.

Northbound traffic was reduced to one lane until a tow truck arrived and removed the RV and trailer.
