50th anniversary weekend packed with activities

The 50th anniversary celebration of Butler Catholic School is planned this weekend.

The school, the oldest consolidated school in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, was formed in 1969 through the merger of St. Michael the Archangel, St. Paul and St. Peter.

Students, family members, alumni and the community are invited to activities at the building, located at 515 E. Locust St.

Festivities begin at 4 p.m. Friday with check in at the school's main entrance. Food trucks are planned in the upper parking lot.A family movie night follows at 7 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Participants should bring blankets, chairs and snacks. A concession stand will also be open.

At 8 a.m. Saturday, participants can check-in. The day offers a variety of activities from 9 a.m. to noon including pick-up basketball games in the gym.Tours of the school, given by current students, will be offered every 30 minutes starting at 9 a.m. A demonstration of the makerspace and robotics program will be given at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. A tour of the school garden is set for 10:30 a.m.Alumni will be able to walk down memory lane hall and peruse scrapbooks and photo albums gathered over the years. A 50th anniversary collaborative art project will be created through out the day.Rosary recitations are planned at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. in the school chapel. An Advent wreath activity is slated for 11:30 a.m. at the school's entrance.Lunch will be served from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.Visitors are also invited to assist with a service project from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and stuff items collected by students, families and the community into backpacks for the Butler Area Weekend Backpack Program.A highlight of the weekend will be a 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday celebrated by Rev. Kevin Fazio, who will be joined by BCS alumni priests, in the school auditorium. The student choir will perform. A group photo will follow Mass at 5 p.m.Evening festivities start with hors d'oeuvres at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m. in the gym. The adults-only program will feature a look back at the school's history and a preview of its future.

A breakfast/brunch will be hosted from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday in the school cafeteria. Memory lane and the art project will be open from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.A final rosary recitation is set for 10 a.m. in the school chapel.Tours of the school will be offered at 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. with everyone gathering for the Benediction at the Fatima Grotto at 11:45 a.m.For more information or to register, contact Kathy Dudley, director of development, at 724-285-4276 or dudleyk@butlercatholic.org.
