Competitors of all ages gathered at Alameda Park Saturday for the second annual Tuff Tornado Run. The Tough-Mudder-style race included a variety of obstacles on a 2-mile course set up near the swimming pool. The event benefits the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.

Butler area “ninja warriors” conquered Alameda Park on Saturday, attacking the second annual Tuff Tornado Run obstacle course.

Proceeds from the run benefit the Butler Area School District's Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation, which funds the Kid's Weekend Backpack Program, teaching grants, technology and other scholastic initiatives.

Organizers estimated roughly 460 participants in the second-year event.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Slippery Rock eighth-grader Kaitlin Parson, 13, still slightly coated with powdered paint from the color run obstacle. “It was hard, but not too hard.”

Mudders of all ages ran the 2-mile obstacle course that featured around 20 family-friendly Tough-Mudder and “American Ninja Warrior” style obstacles.

“My favorite part was the foam,” said Jonah Toogood, 6, of Butler, referring to a giant pile of suds dispensed from a bubble machine at the finish line. The race/fun run gave parents running with their kids the opportunity to assist smaller children through some of the more challenging obstacles.

While organizers had yet to tally a final count of funds raised, the event brought in around $18,000 for the foundation in its first year, according to event managers. This year's proceeds are expected to exceed that total.
