Mars Area sends out shout for eighth-grade cheer coach
ADAMS TWP — Some parents are struggling to cheer Mars Area’s efforts as the district struggles to find an eighth-grade cheer coach.
Christi Soni has a daughter in eighth grade who would have signed up for cheerleading if the district had hired a coach.
Soni told district officials at the Tuesday night board meeting she has had trouble nailing down information about the situation.
“Do you have applicants (who) have submitted their names for this (position)?” Soni asked.
Superintendent Wes Shipley said he couldn’t speak directly to the question.
“I’ve been told that there are two people who have expressed interest,” Shipley said.
Shipley said the district had an applicant in July who was ready to take the position.
“We were going down that road,” Shipley said. “That has fallen through.”
Shipley told Soni if she or anyone she knows is interested in the position, they should apply.
“We are looking to take action quickly,” Shipley said.
Soni said she had emailed Shipley and athletic director Scott Heinauer seeking information about the coaching job description.
“We need information about what the position is,” Soni said. “I’ve actually asked (for) this piece of information back in May with the athletic department and never got anything.”
Soni said without a job description, she and other parents don’t know what — or how — they can commit to the program.
Specifically, Soni said parents need to know how the season is scheduled.
“Really basic information,” Soni said. “I have asked for (it) several times and not gotten it.”
Shipley said he would find out more information for parents.
“We ... are really frustrated,” Soni said. “We feel like we’re getting the run-around.”
“I understand,” Shipley said. “I will work at helping you get some things.”
