Homeless man accused of burglary, thefts

He's in prison on multiple charges

Come for the pizza, break in overnight for the cash.

That's the apparent mentality alleged by charges Butler City Police filed against Dustin Scott, a 23-year-old homeless man. Police believe Scott hung around the Penn Street Pizza on W. Penn Street until after closing on Sept. 26, then broke in.

Scott stole $120, police allege, including $9 that was raised in a candy sale fundraiser.

He faces charges of burglary and theft by unlawful taking.

When police announced these new charges on Wednesday, Scott already was in the Butler County Prison for other theft charges from the same evening.

The same morning as the reported burglary, a leaf blower was reported to police as stolen from a home on the 400 block of West North Street, according to a criminal complaint.

In its place, the thief had left a different, less-expensive leaf blower that police realized had been stolen from yet another property on Sept. 26.

The owner of the pricier leaf blower knew Scott and confronted him. He got back his equipment, and allegedly reported to police that Scott appeared to have other lawn care tools in his possession. Those included a push mower and weed trimmer, both of which also allegedly were stolen.

Scott told police, the criminal complaint said, that he was planning on either selling the items or starting a landscaping company.
