Butler man ordered to avoid school property

A 33-year-old Butler man agreed in court Tuesday to stay off Butler Area School District property after district officials took legal action against him for alleged harassment.

Philip P. Heupel was summoned to civil court Tuesday in Butler after the district accused him of harassing two teachers Friday at the Butler Middle School parking lot. If Heupel violates the order, he could be held in contempt and face a fine of $1,000 and/or imprisonment of six months. The order also bans him from attending any of the district's school-related activities.

Heupel is in Butler County Prison on an unrelated, criminal case.

“My client is suffering from some personal issues that are complex and complicated and they are being addressed,” said Dennis McCurdy, a lawyer representing Heupel in his civil case.

The resolution was reached privately in Common Pleas Judge Michael Yeager's chamber. The permanent injunction replaces a temporary one that had been in place since Friday after the reported harassment.

Two women teachers said Heupel had accosted them while they were in their vehicles, solicitor Andrea Parenti said Monday. One of the teachers said that he wouldn't let her get out of the car.

The order doesn't have a deadline and will be in place indefinitely.

Heupel also has two separate criminal cases that are making their way through the court system.
