Body discovered inside blazing garage
ALLEGHENY TWP — An early morning garage fire led to the discovery of a body at a home in northern Butler County on Monday.
Trooper Dan Kesten said authorities were called to a home at 115 Locust Lane in Allegheny Township, off Foxburg Road, just before 8 a.m.
State police said the woman who lives in the home reported a man, against whom she had a protection from abuse order, had entered the home a short time earlier and then left.
State police reports were conflicting. One said the man was the woman's estranged husband, another said he was her estranged boyfriend.
“He entered the home, woke her up, and then left the house,” Kesten said.
The woman told state police she heard gunshots and looked out her window to see the garage on fire, according to Kesten.
“She fled the residence and got to a safe spot,” Kesten said.
Police, fire and ambulance crews responded. Kesten said officers cleared the scene inside and around the home before firefighters were allowed into the area to knock down the garage fire.
A body was discovered in the garage, authorities said, but had not been identified. Investigators said the coroner's office was expected to use dental records to possibly identify the remains.
Trooper DuWayne Baird, a deputy state police fire marshal, said the extensive damage prevented him from coming up with a definitive cause.
“But from the totality of the circumstances,” he said, “it was most likely intentionally set.”
Baird also noted that the remains of an unidentified long gun were found in the fire debris.
In addition to state police, Eau Claire Volunteer Fire Department, North Washington Volunteer Fire Department, Marion Township Volunteer Fire Company, Parker Volunteer Fire Department, and Emlenton Area Ambulance Service responded.
Authorities did not release any other details.
