SUV hits stairs; driver injured
CONCORD TWP — One man was taken to a hospital after a crash Thursday at the intersection of Hooker Road and Oneida Valley Road.
State police said a man driving southbound in an SUV swerved to avoid another vehicle trying to cross the road.
The SUV struck and got stuck on the stairs of a building on the corner and had heavy front-end damage.
Police said the man was taken to a hospital by Butler Ambulance for suspected minor injuries.
West Sunbury and North Washington fire departments assisted on the scene.
Nearby homeowners watched from their yards and the corners near the accident as emergency crews worked.
Stephanie Howard, a neighbor, said many of the residents who live near the intersection have been frustrated. She said accidents are so common at that junction that neighbors can identify an accident by the sound they hear, even without seeing it.
“They need a stoplight here,” Howard said.
Howard said the current light system, which features blinking yellow for both directions of Oneida Valley Road and a hard stop for both directions of Hooker Road, do not slow people down or demand enough attention of the drivers.
“People need to slow down,” she said. “It's only 30 mph here.”
She said there are also serious blind spots when trying to see around corners and ahead due to the contour of the hill on which the intersection sits atop.
“This is the second accident in a month,” Howard said. “I feel bad for that guy, and the one before that, and the one before that.”
