Monaca man charged after alleged fight over woman
EVANS CITY — A Monaca man was arraigned Monday after police said he punched, kneed and strangled a man during a dispute over a woman in the parking lot of the Evans City magistrate's office.
James Caleb Johnston, 28, was arraigned before District Judge Sue Haggerty on charges of aggravated assault, a first-degree felony; strangulation and criminal mischief, both misdemeanors; and summary disorderly conduct and harassment in the incident.
The victim was taken to a hospital with severe injuries, including a fractured cheekbone.
Officer Richard Conti's affidavit states the fight began after Johnston and the victim separately left Bakers Backstreet Tavern on Jefferson Street, where they had a verbal disagreement over Johnston's relationship with a woman who had previously dated the victim.
According to police, Johnston slowly drove toward the victim, who was by a parking lot on South Washington Street, before exiting the vehicle.
“(The victim) then stated Johnston got out of the car, they exchanged words and he was shoved to the ground,” Conti's affidavit reads.
The complaint alleges Johnston proceeded to knee the victim “multiple times” in the head before punching him and choking the victim from behind. The victim told police he was unsure if he lost consciousness due to his head injuries
“(The victim) stated that he can remember gasping for air and remembers snoring at some point after or before he may or may not have (become) unconscious,” the affidavit states.
The alleged assault ended, Conti's report reads, when a woman came on the scene. The officer further alleges Johnston then slammed the victim's phone on the ground, breaking it in the process.
The affidavit states the incident was videotaped by the magisterial district office's surveillance system.
Johnston is out of the Butler County Prison after he posted bail, according to a corrections officer.
Court records do not indicate if he is represented by an attorney.
