FREEPORT — The state police fire marshal has been called to investigate a blaze late Monday night that forced a family of three out of their home on Washington Street in this Armstrong County town, authorities said.

No one was injured in the fire reported around 11:40 p.m.

Freeport volunteer firefighters had the blaze contained within five to 10 minutes.

The names of the family, a couple and their teenage child, were not immediately released.

The home is a one-story house with a basement.

The homeowners were safe across the street when fire crews arrived, according to Freeport police, who reported heavy smoke coming from the house.

Firefighters quickly made an interior attack through the front door and contained the fire to what appeared to be the front living room.

A cause of the fire is not known and is under investigation. A damage estimate was not available.

The American Red Cross was notified and is assisting the family.

Fire and Freeport EMS crews remained at the scene until around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Assisting the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department were firefighters from South Buffalo in Armstrong County and Buffalo Township and Sarver in Butler County.

The fire marshal could not be reached for comment.
