Looking to stay positive

See if this sounds about right.

High school sports are about character development, learning and having fun — not winning and losing.

High school sports are for the students, not the adults. A family's reputation is not determined by how well its children perform on the field of play.

Participating in a high school sport is not about getting a college scholarship.

Children should talk to the coach about a problem instead of the parent doing it for them.

All of these points were made in an article written by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), based on a survey of 2,000 high school athletic directors.

Those A.D.'s were asked what they like the least about their jobs. A whopping 62 percent said it was “dealing with aggressive parents and adult fans.”

The article went on to say that 80 percent of officials quit after two years, primarily because of verbal abuse from parents. As veteran officials age, there is a shortage of high school officials, particularly in the sports of wrestling, swimming and track and field.

And while members of a community don't flock to a stadium on Friday nights to watch kids experience character development and learning — of course, said community wants to see a win — adult fans do need to keep these games in perspective.

A kid scoring a touchdown, breaking off a big run, making a solid tackle or catching a pass isn't excited about it because of the score of the game. He's excited about his accomplishment, his growth as an athlete.

That can be fun to see, too.

While attaining a college scholarship through sports is exciting, it's also rare. Only two percent of all high school athletes ever get one.

We should all support high school athletics for what they are — a valuable extra-curricular experience for the participating students.

Root for your team to win? Absolutely.

But do so in a positive, constructive way.
