A Petrolia man died Sunday of injuries he received in a one-vehicle accident on Fairview Road in Fairview Township.

FAIRVIEW TWP — A Petrolia man transported by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital following a Sunday afternoon accident on Fairview Road later died from injuries suffered in the crash that sent the SUV he was riding in sliding over an embankment.

State police reported Sunday evening that Dennis Steighner, 57, was pronounced dead at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

Chief Charles Barnes of the Petrolia Volunteer Fire Department said Steighner was a front-seat passenger in a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer traveling east on Fairview Road toward Fairview borough when the one-vehicle crash occurred.

Steighner was transported by STAT MedEvac to Pittsburgh from a staging area near the scene.

Barnes said emergency crews extricated the driver, 51-year-old Katherine Steighner, from the wreck using mechanical means. She and a female passenger, Jessica Steighner, 27, who was sitting in the back seat, were transported by Butler Ambulance Service to Butler Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

Katherine Steighner later was cited for driving too fast for road conditions.

A trooper at the scene said the accident was reported about 1:20 p.m. Sunday.

According to the police report, the rear of the SUV slid out on the wet road, sending the vehicle across the road and up a hillside on the left side of the road, where it tipped over on the passenger side and then slid across the road and over an embankment off the right side of the road.

According to authorities, the driver and the front-seat passenger were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. It was unknown whether the backseat passenger was wearing a seat belt.

Barnes said about 17 emergency responders from Petrolia, Karns City and Butler Ambulance assisted on scene.
