Shoplifter allegedly stuffed pants with frozen food

A hungry shoplifter was caught red-handed with Hot Pockets stuffed in his pants, Butler police said.

An officer found Edward A. Kriebel, 53, of Butler around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Dollar General store on North Main Street, where police were called for a shoplifting in progress.

He acknowledged Patrolman Myles Bizub, police said, and advised that he knew why the officer was there.

Kriebel admitted “he had Hot Pockets in his pants,” Bizub's affidavit said.

The suspect allegedly added that he was hungry and had no money to pay for the microwaveable frozen sandwiches.

But that wasn't all he had in his pants or pockets, police said. He also allegedly removed candy bars, Jimmy Dean breakfast wraps, toothpaste and sleep medication. The merchandise totaled $17.80.

Kriebel was charged Wednesday with a misdemeanor count of retail theft. Police noted that he has one prior shoplifting conviction.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled Sept. 23.
