Two juveniles face charges

ALLEGHENY TWP — Two out-of-state teens are charged as adults with attacking a staff member Wednesday night at a juvenile detention facility in northern Butler County.

Police report the alleged assault occurred around 11:15 p.m. at Western PA Child Care on Route 38 in Allegheny Township. It left the 55-year-old male victim in need of hospital treatment.

The suspects — a 15-year-old from Silver Spring, Md., and a 16-year-old from Washington, D.C., — are detainees at the facility.

Each is charged with felony aggravated assault, as well as misdemeanor charges of simple assault, criminal mischief and a summary charge of harassment.

The victim suffered head and facial injuries and was transported to Clarion Hospital, according to police. His condition was not available Thursday.

In addition to allegedly assaulting the employee, both boys are accused of breaking a window at the facility owned by Mid-Atlantic Youth Services. The company lists itself as the state's “largest private provider of secure residential treatment services” on its website.

In addition to the Butler County facility, the company also lists a location in Luzerne County.

The boys were at the state police barracks in Butler on Thursday and arraigned via video by District Judge Bill O'Donnell. Their preliminary hearings are scheduled for Tuesday at the office of District Judge Lewis Stoughton in Chicora.

Authorities said both boys are being held at the Jefferson County Juvenile Detention Center in Steubenville, Ohio.

The incident is the second of its type this month at Western PA Child Care. The secured facility houses males and females, ages 16 to 21, who have been placed there as part of sentencing from juvenile cases.

Earlier this month, police said two boys, also ages 15 and 16, assaulted two employees at the facility.

The employees suffered apparent minor injuries. Both youths in that incident face felony assault and other charges.

A telephone call to Tim McCulley, the facility's human resources manager, was not immediately returned Thursday.
