Police: Man passed out after earlier burglary

A Butler man who was allegedly found passed out behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle last week is also facing charges for a home burglary just hours prior.

Delmar E. Silk, 60, of Butler, is charged with overnight burglary with a person present and theft by unlawful taking.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, a home on Golden Lane in Connoquenessing Township was reported to have been broken into around 2 a.m. Aug. 21. The owner said her front door was unlocked, and the suspect allegedly entered the home while she was asleep and took a purse from the living room.

The purse reportedly contained a gold watch, a car key, a driver's license and three credit cards, with the complaint estimating the value at $75,000.

The purse was later found inside a stolen vehicle, the report notes. That vehicle was discovered at 7:40 a.m. Aug. 21 on Lindey Road, just west of Route 528 in Brady Township.

According to a separate criminal complaint filed last week by state police, the car was found after a 911 caller reported an unresponsive man in the driver's seat of a vehicle. That man, reported to be Silk, was “highly intoxicated,” and told troopers that he was at his sister's home the night before, and was “unsure of how he had gotten to (Lindey Road),” documents state. He also could not tell police where he had been before he ended up there.

The vehicle was reported stolen out of Butler at 4 a.m. Aug. 19, according to documents.

Silk was arraigned and booked into Butler County Prison on $20,000 bond. That is where state police later interviewed him about the burglary, and Silk allegedly admitted that he entered through the unlocked door and took the purse as he was looking for money. He provided a written statement outlining the incident, the report notes.

Silk was arraigned Sunday, and a $35,000 monetary bond was set for the burglary charges. A Sept. 3 preliminary hearing is scheduled before District Judge Wayne Seibel. Meanwhile, the preliminary hearing in the vehicle theft case is scheduled for Sept. 4 at the office of District Judge Bill O'Donnell in Slippery Rock.
