Disabled car rear-ended as man calls for tow truck

A wrecker employee prepares to remove a Chevrolet Impala that was severely damaged when a sport utility vehicle struck it from behind about 6:20 a.m. Friday on Route 8 south in front of Baglier Buick in Butler Township. No one was injured.

BUTLER TWP — David Luchkiw was on the phone trying to get a tow truck. Little did he know that moments later he would need a wrecker.

While on the phone about 6:20 a.m. Friday standing at the side of Route 8 south in front of Baglier Buick in Butler Township, a sport utility vehicle slammed into the back of his car that had broken down in the right, southbound lane.

“It's a good car,” Luchkiw said, before correcting himself as he gazed at the damage. “Was a good car.”

No one was in the Chevrolet, and the other driver, in a Subaru Forester, was not hurt. But both vehicles were badly damaged.

Butler Township police did not immediately release the name of the other driver.

The accident happened as Luchkiw was headed to work at Ibis Tek in Middlesex Township. His car got as far as the traffic light at the auto dealership when the battery died.

He got out and got on the phone. “I was calling for a tow truck when it happened,” he said, referring to the rear-end wreck.

Afterward, he tried to look on the bright side. First of all, there were no injuries. Secondly, the car was insured.

“I have full coverage,” Luchkiw said.

Additionally, he noted that the car was due for new tires and brake pads.

“I won't have to pay for that now,” he said.

Luchkiw also got some moral support when a buddy and co-worker, Cameron Fouse, 25, of Butler, on his way home from a night shift at Ibis Tek, happened to pass by and see the wreck. He stopped to help.

“You don't let a friend be stranded,” Fouse said.

Police could not say for certain but they believe the accident happened when the other driver may have momentarily taken his eyes of the road.

Drugs or alcohol was not a factor, an officer said, and that driver was not on a phone.
