Only 1 S. Carolina Methodist Church joins LGBT rights effort

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A congregation in South Carolina has become the only United Methodist Church in the state to join a national Christian network pushing for the full inclusion of LGBTQ people in church ministry.

The State reported Monday that the council of the Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia unanimously voted last month to join the Reconciling Ministries Network.

A United Methodist Church in Greenville was the first congregation in the state to join the network of more than 1,000 church communities, but it closed in March.

The General Conference of the United Methodist Church voted in February to follow its “Traditional Plan” and continue to prohibit the ordination of “self-avowed” members of the LGBTQ community.

It also voted to continue banning clergy from officiating same-sex weddings.
