DUI charges lead to warrant
An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday for a Butler Township man after he missed his court appearance on charges of hitting a police cruiser while driving drunk and high on High Street in March.
Chad D. Caldwell, 35, was charged with being more than two-and-a-half times the state’s legal limit for alcohol and on drugs during the time of the March 29 wreck. No one was injured as a result of the crash.
After submitting to a blood test, authorities released Caldwell on his own recognizance. But prosecutors have since reconsidered the decision and Wednesday’s court hearing was called by Assistant District Attorney Robert Zanella to request Caldwell be placed on pretrial supervision, including a SCRAM monitor. The acronym stands for “Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring,” and the device is strapped to an ankle and regularly samples a person’s perspiration.
“We think he fell through the cracks,” Zanella said, explaining the district attorney’s reasoning for the request. He said after reviewing the case, he thought it would be more appropriate to keep Caldwell under government supervision.
Caldwell, who has no attorney, failed to appear Wednesday, which led to the arrest warrant.
According to police reports from the accident, Butler Township Patrolman David Tedeski told troopers he was on an unrelated suspicious person call around 11:15 p.m. when he heard a crash. Tedeski reported he looked up to see that a sport utility vehicle had sideswiped his cruiser.
The police car apparently sustained only minor damage.
The officer confronted the driver, later identified as Caldwell, who reached into his pocket and handed Tedeski a marijuana pipe, according to charging documents.
Caldwell is charged with driving under the influence, DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license, careless driving and failing to keep right.
