Texas man jailed in felony drug case after traffic stop
A Texas man allegedly caught with cocaine, marijuana and more than $1,200 following a traffic stop in Butler faces a hearing next week.
David Johnson, 39, of Houston is charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, a felony. He also is charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, and possession of a small amount of marijuana.
He is being held in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Butler police said Johnson was a passenger in a car that was stopped about 6 p.m. Aug. 8 on North Chestnut Street after Craig J. Winter, 51, of Butler Township, the driver, did not come to a full stop at a stop sign.
Patrolman Kory Fleming got to the car and noticed a digital scale between the two men, police said. Once out of the vehicle, Winter was found with suspected drug contraband including numerous clear plastic bags and a copper scrubber.
A search of Johnson, according to charging documents, turned up $1,262 in the pockets of his shorts.
Police took both men to the station for a strip search, documents said, and found Johnson with two plastic bags containing a combined 4 grams of suspected cocaine and another baggie with 1.7 grams of suspected marijuana.
His preliminary hearing is set for Monday.
Winter was charged by summons with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and a stop sign violation. His preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 30.
Online court records did not indicate if either defendant has an attorney.
