CRANBERRY TWP — A few rounds of mini golf will go a long way to helping provide guide dogs for the blind.

For the 11th year, the Cranberry Township Lions Club will hold a Family Mini-Golf Outing from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 24 at Fun Fore All on Route 19.

The $10 entry fee includes golfing, lunch and a chance at prizes. Contests include a hole-in-one challenge and closest to the pin. Children younger than 12 will receive a gift bag and a $5 game room gift card.

Proceeds from the event go to the club's efforts for Leader Dogs for the Blind, which aims to increase mobility and independence for visually impaired individuals. Training for a dog costs $40,000, and the Cranberry organization has contributed thousands of dollars toward the cause over the years.

According to Tim Roscoe, club secretary, classes are free for participants because of the donations. He said the classes allow the visually impaired to train with their dog and learn to travel safely with a cane. Transportation is also covered.

“Organizing this project gives us a chance to raise awareness of the importance of healthy vision and the causes of vision loss,” said Tim Holt, event co-chairman.

Club officials said the Cranberry group has donated more than $300,000 in its 38 years, much of which goes to local organizations including the Butler Blind Association, Camp Kon-O-Kwee and a sports camp for the visually impaired at Slippery Rock University.
