CONNOQUENESSING TWP — The Butler Farm Show fashion show hosted flashy wings and fabulous beaks Friday afternoon.

Participation was low this year, but the Butler County 4-H Poultry Club hopes coming years will revive an old fan favorite competition — the Poultry Costume Contest.

Three chickens chaperoned by three children each took home first-place ribbons for their costumes.

Brooke Tritch, an 8-year-old from Butler, won the 8-10 age bracket with her partner chicken, Dora. She borrowed the bird, a Speckled Sussex, from Kelly Hoffman, the mother of another child in the club.

The bird, Hoffman explained, is “a supermodel.”

“Yeah, like me,” Brooke exclaimed.

Dora, Brooke explained, always looks into cameras when she's having her photo taken.

Lillian Wassam, 11, of Butler worked hard to calm her chicken, a Buff Brahma, as she maneuvered pipe cleaners into its plumage.

Lillian won the 11-13 age bracket.

Damian Stiffey, 7, of Cambria, arrived in costume with both his bird and father, Chad Stiffey. Stiffey has a love of horses, so they themed their costumes around horse racing.

Damian dressed as a jockey to match his Delaware chicken, while Chad dressed in a suit as a trainer.

Damian did not register for the contest, but was awarded a ribbon for the costume.

The poultry club has between 15 to 20 members. They're hoping to grow the organization, according to Hoffman.

“We're hoping for a little more involvement next year,” Hoffman said.
