Police: Man broke bottle over head

Leo R. Mullen

A Butler man is accused of clubbing his wife in the head with a bottle of vodka during a domestic dispute this week at their home.

The woman needed treatment at Butler Memorial Hospital for an open head wound following the alleged incident Monday night. Her condition was not available.

City police obtained an arrest warrant Tuesday for Leo R. Mullen, 53, on felony assault and other charges.

Officers were called around 9:10 p.m. to the couple's apartment on the 300 block of West Jefferson Street, police said, for an apparent domestic incident with a woman screaming.

Police arrived and found the 46-year-old victim with cuts on her head, left tricep and shin and right knee, according to charging documents. The injuries, she allegedly told police, were from the altercation with her husband.

She recounted that they got into an argument and she subsequently went into the living room and sat down in a chair.

“(Mullen) then came from the bedroom,” documents said, “and smashed a glass bottle of vodka over her head.” He called her a derogatory name and fled the apartment before police arrived.

A Butler Ambulance Service crew tended to the woman before she was taken to the hospital, where she received sutures for her head injury, police said.

Mullen is charged with aggravated assault and simple assault.
