State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-12th, has again called for the impeachment of Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto following a weekend that saw two mass shootings.

After shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, over the weekend, Peduto doubled down on calls for action at the state and federal levels for “common sense” gun legislation. The topic has been a focus for Peduto following the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting last fall in Squirrel Hill. In April, he signed bills enforcing firearms legislation into law.

Those efforts drew the ire of Metcalfe, who in May outlined a resolution to impeach Peduto over the legislation. He said Peduto was “grossly” abusing the law, and had no respect for the U.S. Constitution.

On Tuesday, Metcalfe released a statement again outlining the constitutional right to bear arms, and criticizing Peduto's actions.

“Rather than applauding Mayor Peduto for imposing his blatantly illegal, unconstitutional and extreme red flag gun control ordinances, my impeachment resolution seeks to protect the rights of law-abiding citizens and their Constitution by removing him from office,” the statement reads.

Peduto and his “allies” are “callous, gun-grabbing liberals” who have exploited recent events to “criminalize God-given, constitutionally affirmed rights of law-abiding firearm owners,” Metcalfe said.

On Wednesday, Timothy McNulty, a spokesman for Peduto, said the mayor is proud that he and six members of the Pittsburgh City Council have supported common-sense safety legislation.

“He's calling Rep. Metcalfe and others in the Legislature to have the courage to stand up to the gun lobby as well,” McNulty said. “It's time for lawmakers to take real action to protect the citizens they serve, and not play politics.”
