Judge William Shaffer declined to reduce the bond of a Butler Township man accused of repeatedly ramming a state police vehicle while driving drunk.

Nicholas A. Massella, 23, has been held in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail since a June 2 police chase around Butler that ended in his arrest.

In the chase's aftermath, Massella allegedly admitted to driving drunk and purposely ramming a state trooper's vehicle, injuring the trooper, according to court documents.

Via video conference Wednesday, Massella confessed to the county court that he is an alcoholic and said he would seek addiction help if able to bond out of jail.

“I know I can abstain from alcohol and maintain sobriety and live a normal life,” Massella said.

Richard E. Goldinger, Massella's attorney, noted that Massella's employer had offered to let him return to work, but that jailtime was keeping him away.

Massella is a glass fabricator at United Plate Glass, he said.

According to police, Massella sped away from a traffic stop on West Brady Street in Butler.

Police performed an intentional collision to spin-out Massella's vehicle, a pick-up, to which Massella responded by driving his truck into the police cruiser, causing about $25,000 in damage.

Massella faces 40 charges.

Three of the charges are felonies: aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, criminal mischief and fleeing or attempting to elude police.
