WORTH TWP — Lost and allegedly driving drunk, an out-of-county man needed a ride home.

He probably made the wrong call — he called for police, authorities said.

State police Monday charged Richard C. Smith, 25, of New Brighton, Beaver County with driving under the influence stemming from the incident June 30 in Worth Township.

Around 4:30 a.m., troopers were called for a lost motorist. The disoriented driver had called in to say he had been out drinking with friends at a bar and he “did not know where he was in relation to his house,” police said.

He also had a request for the dispatcher: He wanted a police officer to take him home, according to charging documents.

Smith was apparently way off-course. New Brighton is in central Beaver County, and about 30 miles from where police found him on the 900 block of New Castle Road in Worth Township.

Troopers said he told them he had left the bar in New Brighton around 2:30 a.m. to go to his friend's house. But he got lost, documents said, and “drove around until calling police for a ride home.”

He was eventually taken to UPMC Jameson hospital in New Castle for a blood test. Lab results showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.158 percent, nearly twice the state's 0.08 percent legal limit.

Smith is charged with DUI and four traffic violations. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 4 at the office of District Judge Bill O'Donnell in Slippery Rock.

Smith could not be reached for comment.
