Family drama and hasty decision-making were behind a guilty plea, Raheem J. Robinson explained Monday in court before a Butler judge accepted Robinson's decision to withdraw his plea deal in a drive-by shooting case.

“This case needs to be tried,” Judge Timothy McCune said, accepting Robinson's request to withdrawal his guilty plea.

The trial likely will take place in August.

The 28-year-old Butler resident is being held in Butler County Prison after his bail was denied for his alleged role in an April 5, 2018, drive-by shooting on North Sixth Avenue. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Robinson made a deal with Assistant District Attorney Terri Schultz in which she would drop the majority of charges he faced, including attempted criminal homicide, in return for his guilty plea for a misdemeanor charge of recklessly endangering another person and felony unlawful possession of a firearm. The deal would have put him behind bars for 4½ to 10 years.

But on July 11, as Robinson was about to be sentenced, he said he wanted to withdraw the deal. Robinson explained himself on Monday.

“I was actually going through a lot of family drama, and I jumped to make a decision so at least my family would know when I was coming home,” Robinson said. “But it was the wrong thing to do.”

Schultz declined to question Robinson and instead noted that Robinson didn't assert his innocence during his explanation. She asked McCune to deny Robinson's guilty withdrawal.

“The commonwealth is obviously adverse to this,” Schultz said.

After McCune accepted the deal, Schultz asked that the trial be held in August.
