An Ohio man was killed after a deer struck by an oncoming car crashed through the windshield of the sport utility vehicle he was driving. The vehicle then went off the north side of the road, traveled some distance through the grass and came to rest in front of what police said was an auto shop.

CONNOQUENESSING TWP — An Ohio man was killed Sunday afternoon in a freak accident on Route 68 after a deer struck by an oncoming car crashed through the windshield of the sport utility vehicle he was driving.

State police said the crash happened about 4 p.m. near the Butler County Humane Society. Michael M. Modjallal, 73, of Akron, likely died instantly, according to authorities.

Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr pronounced Modjallal dead at the scene about 4:30 p.m.

“He died of multiple blunt force trauma to the head and chest,” Barr said, adding there would be no autopsy.

Modjallal's wife, 70-year-old Lucia, was a passenger in the front seat of the couple's 2006 Saturn Vue. She suffered apparent back pain and was transported to Butler Memorial Hospital.

Police report Anthony McCoppin, 53, of Blawnox, Pa., was traveling east on Route 68, driving a 1969 Mercury Marauder, when he hit a deer that entered the road from the south.

“The deer was propelled into the westbound lane and went through the windshield of the other vehicle,” said police Cpl. Greg Bogan.

The Saturn went off the north side of the road, traveled some distance through the grass and came to rest at a small retention pond in front of what police said was an auto shop.

The accident left a gaping hole on the driver's side of the windshield. The deer was split in half.

McCoppin was not injured. His car did not appear to be damaged, but there was deer hair on the front of it.

The accident reduced traffic to one lane around the scene as police investigated. The Connoquenessing Volunteer Fire Department assisted.
