Rettig reunion set for Rotary shelterThe 56th Annual Adam Rettig Sr. Family Reunion will begin at 1 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Rotary Shelter in Butler Memorial Park, 100 Memorial Drive.Instead of white elephant gifts, place $1, $2 or $3 in an envelope and drop them into a box that will be provided.Take a well-filled picnic basket, table service and tablecloth, as well as gifts for bingo prizes. Historian speaks at PassavantZELIENOPLE — The next installment of Zelienople Library Presents, an arts and culture speaker series, will be local historian Tom Nesbitt speaking on “Zelienople’s First Settlers.”This program starts at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Passavant Retirement Center’s Scholl Auditorium, 105 Burgess St., and is presented by both the Zelienople Area Public Library and the Zelienople Historical Society.
Jennings celebrates Moth Week Aug. 3BRADY TWP — Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, marks Moth Week at 8 p.m. Aug. 3 with a program to discover these incredible insects.From the tiniest moth at 0.1 inches, to the largest with 6-inch wingspans, moths are incredibly diverse. While often given a bad name by the damage some moth caterpillars cause to crops, moths are actually a fascinating and vital part of the ecosystem.After a short indoor presentation, participants will head outside to the forest and the prairie to attract and observe moths in their natural habitats. The event is free and no registration is required.
Jennings explores life below prairieBRADY TWP — Staff at Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, will host a presentation at 4 p.m. Aug. 4 on life below the prairie, where darkness, hard clay soils and extremes in moisture levels make for a difficult environment in which to survive.This guided walk will begin at the prairie side parking lot.No fees or registration is required.
Astronomy event at Zelienople libraryZELIENOPLE — The Zelienople Area Public Library, 227 S. High St., will have a program with local amateur astronomer Larry McHenry at 7 p.m. Aug. 5.McHenry has been active in astronomy for more than 40 years and will be doing two indoor presentations on “Stargazing and Myths,” an introduction to the constellations and the night sky, followed by “Observing the moon for beginners.”After the indoor presentations, weather permitting, there will be an outdoor observing session with several telescopes to observe the planets Jupiter and Saturn.
