Pa. auditor says district overpaid for bus service

WILKES-BARRE — Pennsylvania’s elected financial watchdog says a school district near Wilkes-Barre overpaid transportation vendors, including for an invoice that claimed a van was used 52 days in a single month.

Democratic Auditor General Eugene DePasquale said Wednesday overpayments from Hanover Area School District included $260,000 to a bus company owned by the parents of a school board member.

DePasquale says a board member voted to approve payments to a relative.

Auditors say over four years ending in June 2017, the Luzerne County district overpaid three special-education transportation vendors by $311,000.

DePasquale says the district replaced several administrators and hired a new busing contractor as a result of the matter.
